We've built over 20 iOS apps in the last five years. Through trial and (mostly) error, here are the principles we now follow on every project:
1. Design for One Hand
Most people use phones with one hand. Make the top of the screen accessible.
- Place key actions within thumb reach
- Avoid requiring one-handed scrolling through long content
- Consider a bottom navigation pattern
2. Local First
Users hate waiting for network requests. Build for local speed:
- Cache data aggressively
- Show offline content
- Sync in the background
3. System Integration
Make your app feel like it belongs:
- Use system fonts and colors
- Respect system dark mode
- Integrate with system features (QuickLook, Share Sheet)
4. Privacy by Default
iOS users are privacy-conscious. Respect that:
- Minimize data collection
- Be transparent about what you collect
- Give users control
5. Test on Real Devices
Simulators are great for early development, but you must test on real devices:
- Different screen sizes
- Different iOS versions
- Real network conditions
We apply these principles to every Better App we build. Want to discuss your iOS app?
